The journey of the Bangladesh Navy began with minimal assets and has culminated in a reckonable modern fleet. In 1971, the newly established force possessed only two gunboats. The first significant post-independence expansion occurred on 10 December 1974, with the commissioning of five patrol crafts. A crucial milestone was achieved in 1976 when the Navy acquired its first capital ship, a Salisbury Class Air Direction Frigate of the Royal Navy, commissioned as BNS UMAR FAROOQ on 10 December 1976. Commencing in 1982, the fleet underwent a profound transformation with the large-scale integration of diverse and modern platforms. This expansion included guided missile frigates, submarines, maritime patrol aircraft, helicopters, unmanned aerial vehicles, and various medium and smaller platforms. This strategic build-up successfully calibrated the Navy's striking power to meet the evolving demands of Bangladesh's national interests.
Today, Bangladesh Navy is a credible, deterrent, and future-ready force. We operate a diverse fleet of modern warships to vigilantly safeguard national sovereignty across the vast Bay of Bengal (BoB). Our modern and versatile fleet is equipped for a full spectrum of tasks, ranging from complex combat and maritime security operations to critical Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) missions.
Our fleet comprises a mix of sophisticated frigates, agile corvettes, and enduring patrol crafts, many constructed or upgraded with indigenous expertise. These ships are the backbone of our maritime power, capable of confronting threats emanating from above and under the water, while also providing critical support during national and regional crises.
Bangladesh Navy continuously integrates advanced technology to ensure operational superiority in our area of responsibility. With modern radar, sonar, Combat Management Systems (CMS), Tactical Data Link (TDL), EW suite and guided munitions, our ships are equipped to detect, track and engage any threat with precision and decisive effect.
As the flagship of the fleet, the BNS Khalid Bin Walid is a multirole Guided Missile Frigate (FFG) designed for providing a powerful presence and deterrence across the Bay of Bengal (BoB).

| Striking Power | Total Awareness |
|---|---|
| Dominant Surface Strike: Armed with potent OTOMAT MK-II anti-ship missiles, the Frigate provides a long-range, over the horizon strike capability essential for strategic deterrence across the EEZ. | Integrated Combat System: The Thales TACTICOS combat system seamlessly integrates all sensors and weapons, providing the Command team with an immediate, decisive operational picture. |
| Versatile Fire Support: A highly capable OTO Melara 76mm Super Rapid gun is the main armament, offering rapid-fire defence against fast surface targets and air threats. Two 40mm OTO Breda cannons offer a critical defence against close-in threats and high-speed targets. | Advanced Surveillance: The DA08 radar delivers robust, long-range air and surface surveillance, ensuring no threat goes undetected within its operational area. |
| ASW Strike: The Frigate is armed with Whitehead A244S torpedoes to neutralize sub-surface threats. | Underwater Protection Suite: The hull-mounted ASO 94-2 sonar is the core of the ship's Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) capability, providing comprehensive detection and tracking. |
| Extended Reach: An AW109 helicopter significantly extends the ship's surveillance and anti-surface engagement capability. | Electronic Support and Countermeasures: Advanced ESM/ECM systems actively protect the ship, jamming enemy radar and other threats. |
