BNS NIRVIK is an important training support base for the elite naval commandos and divers of Bangladesh Navy. Located in Chattogram, it covers 99 acres of land near the Karnaphuli River. The base was established to provide operational and logistics support for commando and diving operations. Apart from this BNS NIRVIK also provide training support for the advanced training in specialized naval operations, such as Naval Commando Basic, Naval Commando Advanced, Naval Commando Specialist, combat missions, rescue operations, diving and salvage counterterrorism, and coastal security.
The idea for BNS NIRVIK came after the important role of naval commandos in Bangladesh’s War of Independence in 1971. Officially started on 23 December 2008, and formally commissioned in 27 December 2011, it focuses on preparing commandos and divers for high-risk missions. These include Maritime and underwater operations, disaster response, and security patrols along the coastline.
BNS NIRVIK plays a key role in protecting Bangladesh’s maritime interests, responding to terrorism, and assisting in disaster relief efforts. It also trains a Quick Response Force (QRF) that can respond rapidly to emergencies.
The base hosts the specialized units such as the Naval Commando Group, Diving and Salvage Group, and the School of SWADS and Centre (SOSAC). These units train personnel in various skills like combat techniques, diving, salvage operation and tactical operations. Additionally, BNS NIRVIK collaborates with sister services and friendly nations and uses advanced technology to ensure its training programs are up-to-date and effective. It is a critical asset for the Bangladesh Navy, ensuring the safety and security of the nation.
